Think of the last time you threw away good food. A few rotis. Half a plate of rice. Bread that went hard at the back of the kitchen. For a moment it felt wrong. Then you moved on.
Most of us were taught that food is more than food. It is , something given to us. When we waste it, a small part of us knows. This blog is about that feeling, and about a simple idea: sasta khana is not cheap food. It is food treated with .
What does sasta khana really mean?
Say out loud and some people hear "low class". We hear something else. Sasta means a fair price. It means someone looked at their money and chose well. Choosing well is not shameful. It is wise.
Sasta khana does not mean old, poor or second-rate food. It means good food at a price that respects your wallet.
Why do we throw away good food?
Kitchens cook for people they cannot predict. Bakeries bake before they know who will walk in. Homes cook a little extra, just in case. None of this is bad. It is how food works. But at the end of the day, some of it is left over.
The UN Environment Programme estimated that 1.05 billion tonnes of food was wasted around the world in 2022. That is about 19% of all the food available to consumers. In the same year, 783 million people faced hunger. Read the UN summary.
We do not have a trusted number for food waste in Pakistan, so we will not make one up. But you do not need a number to feel it. You have seen it.
What does Islam say about wasting food?
Islam teaches us to enjoy what Allah has provided, but not to waste it. The Quran tells us to eat and drink, but not to be wasteful, because Allah does not love the wasteful (Surah Al-A'raf, 7:31). The word for this kind of waste is .
Many of us grew up with this without needing a lesson. Finish what is on your plate. Do not throw bread away. Share with a neighbour. Many people feel that food which is shared and respected brings .
We are not religious scholars, and this blog is not a religious ruling. It is a reminder of a value that many of us already hold.
Why does food feel so expensive now?
You feel it at the shop, the restaurant and the roadside stall. A meal that used to feel normal can now feel like a decision. Many people think twice before eating out. Some stop enjoying a good meal, not because they do not want it, but because the price makes them hesitate.

Can good food be affordable and still feel dignified?
Yes. This is the idea behind SastaKhana. A baker has fresh bread left in the evening. A home chef cooked a little more. A cafe has trays at closing time. The food is good. It only needs someone to enjoy it.
The customer gets a good meal at a lower price. The kitchen earns from food it might have lost. Nobody has to feel ashamed. For more places to look, read Affordable Food in Islamabad: Where the Real Deals Are.
How does saving food help the planet?
Wasted food is not only lost money. It also wastes the water, land, energy and hard work that went into growing and cooking it. When food rots in a landfill, it also gives off methane, a greenhouse gas.
Every meal that gets eaten instead of thrown away is a small win for the planet. To see how this adds up, read The CO2 Math Behind Every Meal You Save.
