A year-old thread, still getting replies

Why Finding Good Food in Islamabad Still Means Asking a Stranger

A Reddit thread asking for Islamabad food recommendations is over a year old and people are still commenting. That alone tells you something.

A little over a year ago, someone posted a simple question in r/islamabad: where do you actually order food from in this city, nothing overpriced, nothing outside Islamabad itself. It is a completely ordinary post. What is not ordinary is that people are still replying to it more than a year later.

That is not a sign of a great thread. It is a sign of a real, unsolved problem.

What the replies actually show

Scroll through the answers and the range is genuinely wide. Afghani tikkas and karahi sit next to Chinese stir-fry, Italian-style panini and pizza, Middle Eastern shawarma, and the usual roster of burger spots. Islamabad's food scene, according to the people who actually eat here every week, is far more varied than any single "best of" list usually gives it credit for.

The other pattern is just as telling. Almost every recommendation gets a reply questioning the price. One popular shawarma spot gets called out for charging well over a thousand rupees for a single item. Even genuinely loved places do not escape it. That tension, between what a place is worth and what it now costs, runs through almost every food conversation in this city right now, not just this one thread.

The real finding is not the food, it is the format

Here is the part worth sitting with. In 2026, finding a good, fairly priced place to eat in your own city still means posting a question to strangers on the internet and hoping the replies are still relevant by the time you read them. There is no reliable way to see, right now, what is actually good and actually worth the price nearby.

That gap, not the specific restaurants named in any one thread, is exactly what a real-time map of what is available and what it costs is supposed to close. It is the same discovery problem behind why SastaKhana exists at all, just visible here in a very ordinary, very human way: a year-old Reddit post that people still can not stop replying to.
